UIA Australia presents more ‘Stars of David’ – Ordinary Israelis, Extraordinary Stories

05 February 2025

In addition to the incredibly moving and thought-provoking Stars of David who have already been announced we are honoured to introduce these bright Stars of David as guests for our 2025 Campaign Gala Events in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth-Ibim-Lev Ofir Choir and Miri Ben Shitrit-both representing resilience, unity, and the spirit of Am Yisrael.

Ibim-Lev Ofir Choir– Voices of Strength and Unity

The Ibim-Lev Ofir Choir, previously known as the Ibim-Lev Choir is a remarkable group of Ethiopian Israeli children from the Ibim Absorption Center, located in the Sha'ar HaNegev region. This UIA supported initiative (through our Aliyah and Absorption program) serves as a first home for Ethiopian Olim, providing them with the essential tools to integrate into Israeli society. On October 7, the community endured a harrowing 36-hour siege under rocket fire before being evacuated to the Nir Etzion Hotel where they remained for five months.

Following October 7, the choir renamed itself the Ibim-Lev Ofir Choir (Ofir's Heart Choir), in memory of Ofir Libstein, the head of the Sha’ar HaNegev Regional Council, who was tragically killed while defending his kibbutz, Kfar Aza. This choir has since become a symbol of Israeli resilience, performing at hospitals, memorials, and major national events. Their voices carry not just music, but the unwavering spirit of those who continue to rebuild in the face of adversity and we feel so privileged to include their performance amongst our Stars of David.

Miri Ben Shitrit – A Star's Journey to Shine Light in Dark Places

Miri’s story begins in Armenia, where her family rediscovered their Jewish identity and immigrated to Israel with the help of The Jewish Agency and UIA. She later moved to Canada but returned to Israel, determined to contribute to our Nation. Her service in the IDF taught her the power of belief and when her commander recognised her potential, she excelled beyond expectations.

Now Miri pays it forward, helping other young Israeli’s to see their own potential, through her work as a mentor in UIA supported Youth Futures. Miri works with at-risk children, helping them find strength and hope in the darkest times. One of her most moving initiatives, The Smile Project, was born from a young girl named Tamari, who had lost her joy due to the war and her own family’s struggles. Through storytelling and acts of kindness, Tamari rediscovered her smile and is now spreading happiness to others, including soldiers protecting Israel.

Standing Together, Supporting the People of Israel

At this year's UIA Gala event- Stars of David, we will honour these ordinary Israelis by hearing their extraordinary stories. These events are fundraisers, with ticket proceeds covering event costs and attendees invited to pledge their support towards rebuilding Israeli communities.

UIA Australia President Esther Frenkiel OAM said, “In any other community stars are celebrities or sports people -in the Jewish community our Stars of David are ordinary Israelis who made the choice to step up in extraordinary ways when their people needed them. The stories of our Stars of David remind us that their struggles and triumphs are ours as well. We look forward to coming together as a community to offer these Israelis our unwavering support.”
